A Review – I gave it 4 stars
Anyone who has lived through the slow agonizing loss of someone they love will find a protagonist they recognize in Eliot. Eliot and Claire have been married for decades. The story drops us into their lives at a point where Eliot believes Claire is approaching her final weeks/months of life. They have navigated the early shock and pain of Claire’s cancer diagnosis and treatment and are settled into new and emotionally tolerable ways of knowing and communicating with each other. That’s what Eliot thinks, in any case.
But then Claire does something that makes Eliot doubt everything he thought he knew about Claire, their relationship, and even himself.
Ann Packer takes us skillfully along this tortured path where everything and everyone is suspect and scabs are picked raw.Can Eliot and Claire find a way back to each other before it’s too late?
